The colloquium aims to provide a forum for exploring the cognitive and semiotic nature of multimodality in media serving the purposes of counter-propaganda. The event will consist of the presentation of Ievgueniia Bondarenko's GATES research followed by a round-table discussion.

The subject's aim focuses on the AI-based corpus of 2,000 specifically tagged Ukrainian war memes analyzed as vehicles of nation building concepts and symbols. Among their many functions, these memes aim to support, protect, and sustain the national information sphere under a continuous pressure of information warfare.  

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • memetics in counter-propaganda;

  • cognitive aspects of counter-propaganda in the media;

  • semiotics of counter-propaganda in the media;

  • multimodality and meaning-making in propaganda and counter-propaganda.

Format
  • Presentation - 55 minutes (45 min. presentation + 10 min. Q&A)

  • Round table talks -  30 minutes (20 min. presentation + 10 min. Q&A)

  • Mode: Online 

Abstract Submission Guidelines
  • English 

  • Length: Up to 100 words (including references).

  • Content: Specify research questions, approach, method, data, and results. Add 5 keywords.

  • Title in ALL CAPS

  • Author name(s), Affiliation and country, e-mail address(es)

  • Times New Roman 12 pt, single-spaced, Minimal use of special fonts, figures, and tables; No footnotes

  • File names: authorname.pdf and authorname.doc(x)
