GATES Talks / Recherche
On 21 May 2026
As part of the GATES project, a talk will be presented by Andrew YARROW, Journalist and historian from George Mason University and GATES Distinguished Fellow and Frédéric GONTHIER, Professor of Sociology at Sciences Po Grenoble.
After an introduction by Frederic Gonthier, university professor of sociology at Sciences Po Grenoble, Andrew Yarrow will discuss and present his research on masculinism, a multi-faceted ideology and movement that asserts that masculinity is in "crisis" in a "feminized" society. Its "unifying thread," according to one definition is "virulent, at times violent misogyny, and the practice of blaming women and a large feminist conspiracy for the ills of (mostly white) men today” in Western societies.
Although its more extreme forms are only adhered to by a minority of men, it has had a growing influence particularly among young men since the 2010s, aligning with and bolstering support for rightwing parties in the United States, Britain, Germany, France, and elsewhere.
Andrew Yarrow is a journalist and historian, and has taught at George Mason and American Universities and Sciences Po Grenoble. He has written six books, including LOOK: How a Highly Influential Magazine Helped Define Mid-20th-Century America, Man Out: Men on the Sidelines of American Life, and Measuring America: How Economic Growth Came to Define American Greatness. He was a reporter for The New York Times, has published in many major media, and is producing a documentary film. He was a Clinton Administration speechwriter and has also worked or consulted for the Brookings Institution, Public Agenda, Oxfam, the World Bank, UNICEF, the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Export-Import Bank. He received a Ph.D. from George Mason University, Master’s degrees from Princeton and Harvard Universities, and a B.A. from UCLA.
Frédéric Gonthier is Professor of Political Science at Sciences Po Grenoble and a researcher at PACTE. His research focuses on the evolution of value systems in Europe and the associated electoral dynamics. At the international level, he serves as the scientific coordinator for France for the International Social Survey Programme and the European Values Study. At the national level, he coordinates Challenge 2, “Rethinking the spaces and forms of civic expression,” within the DemoCIS programme (AMI SHS), where he oversees the “Barometer of Democracy – Ordinary Conceptions.” He has notably co-edited French Democracy in Distress: Challenges and Opportunities in French Politics (Springer, 2025) and Investigating Forty Years of French Politics Through Value Changes (Springer, 2024).
